Master of Science in Systems Engineering

Effective January 7, 2020, this program is no longer available for future enrollments at the Virtual Campus.

Effective April 3, 2018, this program is no longer available for future enrollments at the Denver campus.

Effective July 2, 2019, this program is no longer available for future enrollments at the Colorado Springs campus.

The Master of Science in Systems Engineering is a 48-credit-hour program offered online and at the Colorado Springs campus. This degree is designed for skilled professionals who can manage the development of complex engineering systems. The program aims to provide technical depth in engineering topics covering the overall process of defining, developing, operating, maintaining, and ultimately replacing quality systems.

This program is designed to help enable students to build upon their existing engineering knowledge and develop an in-depth understanding of modern systems design and implementation knowledge for emerging and evolving engineering technologies. Students have an opportunity to be involved in advanced systems design processes and frameworks to define, develop, implement, and test complex systems. Students are encouraged to apply their systems engineering knowledge and skills to course projects based on industry trends as well as have the opportunity to develop systems engineering, project management, and leadership skills to help them prepare for engineering responsibilities.

This program does not lead to additional licensure or certification.  As such, CTU has made no determination regarding prerequisites for licensure or certification in any state or jurisdiction.

Mission Statement

The mission of the College of Engineering is to develop team-oriented engineering professionals from diverse backgrounds who are prepared to ethically apply industry-relevant, real-world skills to achieve value-added solutions in a dynamic world.

Program Requirements

MSSE Foundation Requirements

The Master of Science in Systems Engineering (MSSE) is built upon the expectation that students will enter the program with a solid engineering background. Therefore, the MSSE program requires students to have prior foundational knowledge in all core engineering disciplines to be successful.

Students entering into the MSSE program without a bachelor’s degree in computer or electrical engineering will be required to successfully complete two MSSE foundation courses (MATH502 and CE502) covering the following discipline areas of engineering: calculus, differential equations, probability and statistics, linear and non-linear equations, discrete math, analog and digital electronics, circuit analysis, synchronous and combinational logic circuits, and embedded systems.

If a student can show evidence of satisfying the foundation course objectives through coursework from an accredited institution, the foundation requirement can be waived.

The foundation courses are also available to students who met the undergraduate requirements but who wish to refresh their knowledge in these subject areas.

The MSSE foundation course MATH502 must be completed and passed prior to beginning courses in the MSSE program. Students will need to complete and pass CE502 prior to the end of the first quarter.

Students must be able to exhibit proficiency by successfully completing the foundation courses with a minimum 70% passing score. If after 5 attempts (applies to each course separately) students do not pass the foundation courses, students are encouraged to work with the Student Success department if they have questions regarding these foundation courses, timeframes for completion, or for alternative programs of study as needed.

Students who do not meet the MSSE foundation requirements will be withdrawn, canceled or transferred from the MSSE program.
