HIST102 American History I: From the Colonial Period to Reconstruction

This course will survey American History from the Colonial Period through the period of Reconstruction following the Civil War. Emphasis will be given to questions of race and class, immigration and settlement; and the conflict between institutional continuity and historical change. Topics to be covered include: Colonization; the conflict between European settlers and Native Peoples; the plantation system and rise of slavery; the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution; westward expansion; and the Civil War and its consequences.
