HIST112 Western Civilization I: From its Origins to the Renaissance

This course will survey Western Civilization from its origins in the Ancient Near East to the European Renaissance of the 14^th and 15^th centuries. Emphasis will be given to social, cultural, and institutional developments. Topics will include the Agricultural Revolution and the birth of settled societies, the first civilizations in Afro-Asia and Mesopotamia, Classical and Hellenistic Greece, Republican and Imperial Rome, Byzantine civilization and the Early Middle Ages, the High Middle Ages, Humanism and the Renaissance.
