PSYC424 Diversity
Our increasingly diverse nation and globalization requires us to develop a greater awareness and sensitivity to others. We must understand the reality of a diverse and globally connected world, and, appreciate how our differences can affect the way we interact with others in our personal lives and in the workplace. This course focuses on the links between diversity and the psychological processes that guide our feelings, actions, and thoughts. Students will discuss psychological processes at the individual, interpersonal, group, and international levels as they relate to diversity. This course will examine the definition of diversity and how race, ethnicity, age, sexual identification, political affiliation, socio-economic status, culture, nationality, and religion influence individuals. The course will also examine diversity as it relates to perceptions of fairness, justice, social problems, social change, and respect. Students will analyze the research on diversity related to these important issues and apply that knowledge to further understanding themselves and others. Today’s individuals must develop ways to effectively and ethically address issues of diversity to achieve positive outcomes within a variety of settings.
