Pregnancy and Parenting

Colorado Technical University (“CTU”) is committed to providing a safe and fair learning environment for all students, including those seeking their studies while pregnant and/or recovering from pregnancy related conditions. Students with pregnancy related conditions are entitled to reasonable Title IX accommodations to ensure they are given equitable learning opportunities during their courses. Reasonable Title IX accommodations available under this policy include, but are not limited to: Extended deadlines on assignments, removal of late penalties, an Incomplete Extension at the end of the course, and campus based accommodations (when applicable) such as elevator access, preferred/alternate seating, and frequent bathroom breaks.

Pregnancy and pregnancy related conditions covered under Title IX include: pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, conditions arising in connection with pregnancy, and recovery from these conditions. This list is not exhaustive.

Any additional time granted after the course closes and final grades are posted must be approved by the Title IX Coordinator and/or designated University Leadership.
Students needing additional accommodations related to Pregnancy or pregnancy related conditions that extend beyond the details of this policy should reach out to their Student Success Coach for further intervention with the Title IX team and/or designated leadership. Student Success Coaches are also available to discuss needs related to University leave of absence options or course loads, as well as scheduling impacts related to the physical attendance of the Doctoral Symposium and/or any practicum/lab requirements within the College of Nursing.
In some cases, supporting documentation may be requested from the Title IX Coordinator or University designee. “Documentation” is considered official written notice from the student's physician or other qualified medical professional. Said documentation may include information pertaining to the physical or emotional needs that impact the students’ academic success. Requested detail may include the student's name, evidence of the pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition and the dates on which they occurred; as well as but are not limited to, hospital discharge paperwork, or medical appointment paperwork.

Students who currently receive ADA Accommodations in their CTU program are still eligible to seek Pregnancy related Title IX Accommodations through this policy; however accommodations are not stackable in matters of gaining supplemental days to submit work via extensions and/or Incomplete Extensions. Reasonable accommodations due to pregnancy, pregnancy complications, and/or pregnancy related conditions may co-exist with an alternate diagnosis tied to ADA Accommodations. In these instances, the student will receive the benefit of both policies as applicable. The Title IX Office and ADA Coordinator will work in tandem to ensure students’ needs are addressed and faculty receive necessary guidance and support. Unless otherwise specified by the Title IX Coordinator and/or Designee, Pregnancy Accommodations may not exceed eight (8) weeks beyond the reported or expected birth due date.

Students receiving Title IX Accommodations due to pregnancy or pregnancy related conditions must still adhere to the University’s Attendance Policy found here.

For questions related to this policy, please contact Student Affairs or the Title IX Coordinator at CTUOnline_Title9Coordinator@coloradotech.edu.
If you feel you are being discriminated against because you are pregnant or parenting, you may file a complaint by using the University’s internal Title IX grievance procedures (see Investigation & Discrimination Procedures under the Sexual Misconduct-Sexual Harassment Policy under Title IX).
