HSS121 Medical Terminology

This course is an introduction to the language of health care focusing on the construction, definition, spelling and pronunciation of medical terms, and the definition of common abbreviations and acronyms. Content is organized by major organ system and covers basic anatomy and function, disease conditions, symptoms, diagnosis, diagnostic testing, pharmacology, and therapies. Students are provided with workplace scenarios and examples of health records that demonstrate the importance of understanding and using medical terminology to both healthcare administrators and providers. Students are introduced to the terminology of complementary and alternative medicine and the importance of culturally competent communication.
