CJFI457 Taphonomy – Applied Decomposition Research

This course is interdisciplinary and will introduce students to field-based research in taphonomy--the post-mortem history of organisms. Students will obtain hands-on experience in extracting and interpreting biological and environmental information gained from the investigative process of decomposition in an outdoor environment using pigs as human models. The research project will require daily collection of specific samples; i.e., soil samples, fly larvae, flies, beetles, maggots, soft tissue samples, etc... , , WARNING: Some materials presented in class as well as the research project itself is of a graphic nature and may be offensive to some students!, Student discretion is advised when considering taking this course; this course is not recommended for the squeamish!
